How much water should a dog on wet food drink?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Most veterinarians advise that dogs should be consuming about 0.75 ounces of water for every pound that they weigh. Keep in mind that wet dog food contains moisture. Dogs who are on a wet food diet may drink less water than dogs on just a dry food diet. Every dog owner should know how to check for dehydration.

How much water do dogs get from wet food?

Wet, canned dog food is about 80% water. Dogs fed an exclusively dry diet will need more than their basic needs. Dogs fed an all wet diet may not need as much water. A combination diet (dry and wet) will need a variable increase or decrease in water needs.

Does dry dog food make a dog drink more water?

A dog eating a dry kibble food, however, may need more water because of the lack of moisture in his food plus the dry food may actually make him more thirsty.

How much water is in wet food?

Wet or canned food contains about 80% water where as dry food contains about 10%. A 4kg cat solely eating canned food may only need to drink about 30ml of water per day where as the same cat eating only dry food would need to drink more than 200ml of water per day.

How much water should I give my dog at a time?

Most need about an ounce of fluids per pound of body weight per day, so a 10-pound dog needs a bit over a cup of clean water daily. Really active or lactating dogs may need more and puppies generally drink more than adult dogs. If your dog drinks a lot more than that, it may signal a health problem.
