Ask around to see if the shelter/rescue has a history of adopting out aggressive animals. Ask your vet, ask your neighbor, ask the local animal control officer. Ask to see how the dog acts around men/women/kids, without the handler, although the way they act at the shelter may not be how they act at your home.
