Pies are a popular, though rarely heart-healthy, comfort food. But with a few changes even those with heart disease can enjoy them, says Senior Dietitian Victoria Taylor.

Even though pies are calorie dense, the fruit filling provides nutrients, fiber and antioxidants.

At 8 servings, a slice of cake will be roughly 324 calories while the pie at 5 servings will net you roughly 702 calories a slice. (Slicing the pie smaller for 8 servings puts you at 440 calories per slice.) So in this instance, the cake is the better for you option when it comes to calories.
Can pie make you fat?
Now, eating foods that are packed with the wrong kinds of fat will make you fat. Trans fats found in pie crusts and other baked goods, and saturated fats found in processed and grain-fed meats, add hefty calories while doing mostly harm to your body's nutritional bottom line.
