Lungworms are hair-shaped worms that generally range from one to four centimeters in length. The females are significantly longer than the males. Two species of this worm are able to infect cats. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus , also known as Feline Lungworm, is the most common lungworm found in cats.

A definitive diagnosis of a lungworm infection is usually made by identification of parasite stages in the feces of an infected animal. The eggs of Eucoleus aerophilus and Eucoleus boehmi may be detected in a routine fecal flotation test or in an examination of saliva or nasal discharges.

How do you get rid of lung worms?

Treatment to get rid of lungworms in dogs involves a dewormer that's usually administered orally for 14 days. Your dog's immune system will generate inflammation as a reaction to the dead worms and larvae, so your veterinarian may also prescribe a corticosteroid anti-inflammatory medication.

Can humans get lung worm?

People can be infected when they deliberately or accidentally eat a raw snail or slug that contains the lung worm larvae or if they eat unwashed lettuce or other raw leafy vegetables that have been contaminated by the slime of infected snails or slugs.
