Roundworms, whipworms, tapeworms and hookworms can be seen in your dog's feces. Hookworms will look like a thin string in your dog's feces, but you may not be able to seem them even if your dog has hookworms. Hookworms are rarely seen in your pet's poop because they are hooked inside your dog's intestines. They are also very small. The adult hookworm is up to 3 mm long and difficult to see without a microscope. It takes 2 to 3 weeks for hookworms to start laying eggs that can be detected.

What do hookworm infections look like?

Animal hookworms can cause a rash as they move under the skin. This itchy rash, called cutaneous larva migrans, shows up as a thin, raised red line that spreads across the skin.

How do you know if your pet has hookworms?

Hookworms are diagnosed with a microscopic examination of a stool sample by a technique called fecal flotation. The stool is mixed with a solution that causes the parasite eggs to float to the top of the solution and adhere to a glass slide placed on its surface.

How do I get rid of hookworms in my dog?

The primary treatment for hookworms is an antiparisitic, usually fenbendazole, moxidectin, or pyrantel. This treatment is administered orally for around 2-3 weeks. Other treatment that may be given includes IV fluids and electrolytes if the dog is weak, and iron supplements for anemia.
