What food causes heart failure in dogs?

In August 2021, researchers from Tufts University published a study that indicated that peas may be a leading dog food ingredient contributing to a rise in diet-associated canine heart disease (DCM) in dogs.

Does grain free dog food cause cardiomyopathy?

As grain-free pet foods rose in popularity, vets started noticing a potential connection between dogs who were on a grain-free diet and a type of heart disease called canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

What do you feed a dog with cardiomyopathy?

The mainstays of a good low-sodium diet may be fresh beef, pork, chicken, bland macaroni and/or low-sodium. Do not give “dog snacks.” A good diet is 1/4-pound ground round or other lean beef, 2 cups cooked white rice without salt, add a tablespoon vegetable oil, and one tablet of Pet-Cal supplement.

What should I feed my dog to avoid DCM?

If possible diet-associated DCM is diagnosed, we recommend changing the diet to one made by a well-established manufacturer that contains standard ingredients (e.g. chicken, beef, rice, corn, and wheat). All dogs in the household eating the same grain-free diet should have their diet changed.
