What are Bully whippets?
Dogs carrying one mutation (heterozygotes) are more muscular than normal whippets and have higher athletic potential from which they derive benefit in competitive racing events. Dogs with two copies of mutation (mutant homozygotes) are so-called „bully" whippets, extremely muscular dogs and are not suitable for races.
How long do bully whippets live?
Given proper nutrition, exercise, and veterinary care, most Whippets live for 12 to 15 years. A UK breed survey puts the median lifespan at 12 years 10 months. They are generally healthy, and are not prone to the frequent ear infections, skin allergies, or digestive problems that can afflict other breeds.
Why are whippets so muscular?
The National Institutes of Health study reported that whippets with a single defective copy of the gene have increased muscle mass that can enhance racing performance in the breed. But whippets with two mutated copies of the gene become “double-muscled,” like Wendy.
Can humans be double muscled?
Myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy is a rare condition characterized by reduced body fat and increased muscle size. Affected individuals have up to twice the usual amount of muscle mass in their bodies.
