Why do dogs start to look like their owners?
When people pick a pet, they seek one that resembles them, and when they get a purebred, they get what they want. More recent research, conducted by Japanese psychologist Sadahiko Nakajima of Kwansei Gakuin University, suggests it's the eyes that hold the key to pet-person resemblance.

This is also called emotional contagion. Research has shown that if you have a personality trait like laid back or neurotic, your dog will mimic that trait, too. You might also be training your dog and you don't even realize it.

It's actually scientifically proven that dogs and their owners look similar. One 2004 study published in the journal Psychological Science found that people were able to match photos of dogs and their owners, based solely on physical similarities.

But why do people wind up looking like their dogs? Nakajima told HuffPost that "a major reason of the dog-owner facial resemblance is the so-called 'mere exposure effect,'" or the idea that a person might choose to get a dog who looks similar to themselves because of a preference for the familiar.
