What to do if your Budgie is bleeding from its feathers?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

To help stop the bleeding, you can apply styptic powder, corn starch or flour to the damaged end of the feather. If the bleeding does not stop within 3-5 minutes seek help from an avian veterinarian. It is not recommended to pull the blood feather at home.

Why is my budgies feather bleeding?

Blood feathers are the newly developing feathers that usually occur in baby birds or that grow to replace feathers lost through moulting in adult birds. Since they are actively growing, these feathers have a large blood supply within the shaft to support them. (These blood vessels then regress as the feather matures).

How do you heal a blood feather?

After you have plucked the blood feather, place a pinch of cornstarch on the affected area to help aid clotting, and use a piece of sterile gauze to apply pressure to the feather follicle until the bleeding has stopped. A new blood feather should start to grow to replace the one that had to be pulled in a few days.

How do I stop my budgies wings from bleeding?

Wing feathers are most commonly affected with blood feathers. To stop the bleeding, the feather needs to be completely removed. With the wing fully extended, grasp the quill of the feather as high as possible above the crack with forceps or a tweezers.
