Can you always see threadworms?
Threadworms look like thin, white, cotton threads. Sometimes you can see them in faeces (stools or motions) in the toilet. If you cannot see threadworms in the faeces, but suspect your child has threadworms (if they have an itchy bottom), try inspecting the child's anus.
How do you get threadworms in the first place?
You or your child can get threadworms by accidently swallowing worm eggs found on contaminated surfaces. This can happen by scratching the anal region and then touching your mouth or food.
How long do you have worms before you see them?
Sometimes pinworms can be seen around your anus or on your underwear or bed sheets about 2 to 3 hours after you've gone to bed. Most of the time, pinworms don't cause major problems. But in rare cases, they can cause infections of the vagina and uterus. If you have a tapeworm infection, you may not have any symptoms.
How long can you have threadworms without knowing?
According to one consultant physician, threadworm infestation is as common in children as head lice and affects most families at some time. Threadworms usually produce no symptoms except an itchy bottom. In fact, people may harbour them for years without realising it.
