Where do pinworms live naturally?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Pinworms are white, parasitic worms that can live in the large intestine of humans. They are about one-half inch long. While the infected person sleeps, female pinworms leave the intestinal tract and lay their eggs on the skin around the anus.

Where do pinworms even come from?

Accidentally swallowing or breathing in pinworm eggs causes a pinworm infection. The tiny (microscopic) eggs can be carried to your mouth by contaminated food, drink or your fingers. Once swallowed, the eggs hatch in the intestines and mature into adult worms within a few weeks.

Do pinworms come out naturally?

Pinworms often exit the anus while a person sleeps. Because of this, people who suspect they've been infected should conduct a tape test upon waking in the morning. If eggs are present, they'll stick to the tape.

Where do pinworms live outside the body?

Eggs can live for 2 to 3 weeks outside the body. They can be found in house dust, on toilet seats, bed linens and toys and in play areas in or outside the home. Although pinworms only grow in humans, the eggs can be carried in a pet's fur.
