Each year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) produces a list of fruits and vegetables with the highest levels of pesticide residue, known as the “Dirty Dozen.” Strawberries often rank high up on this list.


Why is eating strawberries dangerous?

One serving of fresh strawberries is seven medium strawberries or 1/2 cup of chopped fresh strawberries. Like other fresh produce, straw- berries can become contaminated with harmful bacteria or viruses known as pathogens. Examples of pathogens include Salmonella, E. coli 0157:H7 and Hepatitis A.

Can strawberries be toxic?

Strawberries are #1 on the 2016 Dirty Dozen list of fruits and vegetables that contain the most pesticides, or the most toxic pesticides. The list is compiled annually by the Environmental Working Group based on the USDA's Pesticide Data Program.

When should you not eat strawberries?

Any signs of white or grey mold mean the specimen is spoiled. Bruised, soft, or mushy. Soft strawberries are past their prime, and usually not that tasty.
