When dogs are feeling threatened or under stress, they have four options, flight, flight, fool around, and freeze. Freezing is a common response for greyhounds and especially when they have been exposed to too much too soon and are feeling overwhelmed. It can happen immediately or become a coping mechanism over time.
Why do greyhounds just stop walking?
Freezing (suddenly stopping and refusing to move) on walks is a sign your greyhound is feeling extremely fearful and overwhelmed. If this happens, just give them time to relax and talk to them reassuringly and then follow-up by seeking advice from a veterinary behaviour consultant.
How do you tell if a greyhound is stressed?
Please seek advice from a veterinary behaviourist if your greyhound is showing signs of anxiety such as:1Separation distress, vocalising in your absence.2Freezing on walks.3Sleep aggression.4Resource guarding (aggression associated with food or toys etc)5Excessive fear.6Difficulty in toilet training.
Can you walk a greyhound too much?
For a normal greyhound, two, yes, two 20 minute walks per day are sufficient. Be warned you can overdo the distance bit and there is a good chance that your greyhound will flop down and refuse to move!! Our Molly was very prone to do this and it took a good 20 minutes before she would move herself.
Why does my dog keep freezing on walks?
' Dogs commonly exhibit freezing when reacting to stress or fear. Once they're still, they assess the situation and then decide what to do next. Is it safe to move on or could the danger still be in the area? If they continue to feel under threat, they may refuse to walk on.
