Talk To The Vet Though it is unlikely, it may be possible that your dog isn't eating food because of poor oral hygiene, obstruction in the food pipe, an internal injury, depression etc. If your dog isn't eating for more than two days, you must take them to the vet.

Why won't my dog eat unless I feed him?

Anxiety or fear. Something scared them at the bowl, like another dog or a loud noise. Too busy. Dogs who are vigilant watchdogs may be too busy to take time away from looking out the window or watching the birds to eat from their bowl.

Why does my dog only eat when I feed him?

Some dogs may be naturally more protective of their food and treats than others. Hand feeding your dog discourages resource guarding—your dog protecting their food. Your dog learns that you are the only pathway toward food and that you are the source of rewards and goodies.

Will dogs starve themselves if they don't like their food?

Every dog is different When it comes to fussy eating, remember that dogs will not normally starve themselves just because they are a bit choosy about their food (although if your dog goes 24 hours without eating anything, consult your vet).

Why won't my dog eat when he's hungry?

Your dog could be avoiding his food due to liver disease, infections, a blockage, tumor or kidney failure. If your dog isn't eating but seems otherwise fine, that's likely not the issue. However, if he doesn't start chowing down within 24 hours, it's time to seek medical help.
