Do roundworms lay eggs or give birth?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

They reproduce very quickly. Female roundworms may lay more than 200,000 eggs a day. These eggs leave the body through bowel movements. If a child swallows a roundworm egg, it passes down into the intestine and hatches into a baby worm (larva).

How are roundworms born?

Roundworms can also develop in a puppy after it is born when the puppy eats larvated eggs from the environment or drinks worm larvae (young worms) in the mother's milk. Another way roundworms are passed is when roundworm larvae are present in the tissues of a mouse or another small mammal and the puppy eats the animal.

How do I get rid of roundworm eggs in my house?

Treatment generally consists of a general dewormer and environmental cleaning. Indoors, the floor should be vacuumed and cleaned with an all-purpose cleaner. Litter boxes and bedding should be scrubbed and laundered. All animals in the house should be dewormed together to ensure all infected animals are treated.

Where do roundworm eggs come from?

Larvae grow into adults in the intestines, where they can be 3 feet long. Then the adult moves to another area of the body (usually the legs) and comes out through a painful blister. The tip of the worm comes out through the skin to lay its eggs whenever the skin is immersed in water.

What kills roundworm eggs?

Even harsh chemicals are unlikely to destroy roundworm eggs. Eggs can survive in soil in severe climates -- cold or heat -- for several months. The only thing known to kill them is extreme heat, such as from steam or fire.
