Front leg inner length is measured from the bottom of the chest along the inside of the leg to the wrist bone. The front leg should be shorter than the inside length of the dog's leg. So that the dog can safely run and play while wearing the overalls, the front legs should at most reach the dog's wrist.

Using a flexible measuring tape, measure from the point of the elbow on one side of your dog to the point of the elbow on the other side. Measure around the left leg at the point of the elbow, then again four inches below the elbow. Repeat with the right leg.

An apparent leg length can be measured from the umbilicus to the medial malleoli of the ankle (Fig. 2). A “direct” measurement using a tape measure can be utilized to measure the “true” leg length from the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the medial malleolus.
