Whippets compete in Lure Coursing by chasing a plastic lure around a field while being timed. Whippets were originally used for hunting, especially before they arrived in America. They are one of several Sighthound breeds that excel in speed-based AKC sports such as AKC Lure Coursing.
Will a Whippet protect you?
Whippets like to be with you and even want to be touching you when they sleep. They are gentle and non-aggressive. The biggest danger to people is their wagging tail that can leave welts on you once it gets going and smacks your leg. They are hopeless as protection dogs.
Are Whippets calm dogs?
At home, Whippets are generally quiet and gentle dogs, content to spend much of the day sleeping on the couch, crated, or on one of the soft dog beds popular with Whippet owners. They are not generally aggressive with other animals, and they are friendly to visitors.
Do Whippets make good family pets?
Whippets are a popular choice for families as they are so calm and gentle around children. As they are a little sensitive, we'd recommend a home with slightly older children who understand when to give your dog space.
Are Whippets cuddly?
Cuddles. They may not be the fluffiest of pups but, if you're sat on the sofa, don't be surprised to find your whippet wants to cuddle up to you. Which is great in winter because they serve as a little hot water bottle.
