Fenbendazole (brand names Panacur®, Safe-Guard®) is a medication used to treat a variety of parasites (e.g., roundworms, hookworms, lungworm, whipworm, and certain types of tapeworms) in dogs. Its use in cats for the treatment of parasites is 'off label' or 'extra label'.
Does fenbendazole treat all worms?
Fenbendazole is labeled for use in cows, horses, pigs and dogs; but has also been used in cats, sheep, birds, reptiles and fish. It's labeled to kill roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and some tapeworms, but it isn't effective against the most common tapeworms, and therefore shouldn't be relied on to kill tapes.
What is the drug fenbendazole used for?
Fenbendazole, [5-(phenylthio)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl]carbamic acid methyl ester, is widely used to treat pinworms, other helminthes, and a variety of parasitic infections in laboratory animals, livestock, companion animals, and people (1–3).
How long does it take fenbendazole to work?
This medication should start having effects within 1 to 2 days; however, you will not see the effects of this medication outwardly until the therapy is complete. Your veterinarian will need to run further tests to determine if the medication is working appropriately.
What's the difference between fenbendazole and ivermectin?
Ivermectin has a longer duration of activity and thus may be effective against some level of reinfection from parasites overwintering on pastures. Fenbendazole does not have any residual activity and it may appear that fenbendazole is not as effective simply due to this difference.
